Dispose of your media with care. Simply tossing old media in a dumpster puts you at risk if someone wishes to uncover your company's sensitive data for competitive or legal reasons. Using the erase function in your backup software does not necessarily ensure that the data on the tape is unrecoverable.

Today's high capacity tape has very high coercivity specifications. The higher the coercivity the harder it is to degauss the tape. Therefore in-house degaussers may be inadequate to erase data. It takes fairly large, high-powered degaussers to eradicate data off of a DLTtape or Super DLTtape cartridge for example.

For this reason, we recommend destroying media at a bonded vendor to ensure your data is eradicated and doesn't fall into unknown hands.
