All DataBank vaults are no-expense-spared, state-of-the-art, purpose-built, climate-controlled, security facilities.

Construction

The DataBank vaults are purpose-built, reinforced concrete bunkers with secured internal loading docks and are located in inconspicuous locations. Every detail of construction has been carefully planned to ensure the highest level of protection for your data. DataBank vaults do not have common walls with other buildings and have reinforced concrete ceilings.

Locations

The vault locations were selected in order to provide sufficient distance from our clients' production sites to comply with Disaster Recovery and audit requirements, yet accessible enough to enable retrieval within one hour to the majority of sites. Site location takes into account at least two arterial roads to enter / exit the facility. DataBank vaults are carefully chosen and typically located in residential / small business zones, eliminating risks associated with industrial zones (chemical, gas, fuel etc). DataBank vaults are specifically not located on commercial flight paths.

Security and Protection

DataBank's state-of-the-art security systems ensure "intrusion-proof" facilities, with 24-hour secure monitoring, seismic alarms in the walls, movement detectors, reed switches on all doors, CCTV with back-to-base monitoring and code-locked doors throughout. The only access to the storage area is via a single, high security Bank Vault strongroom door.

Security is first and foremost in the induction and ongoing training of staff. Security is further enhanced by no signage on buildings, unpublished street addresses, unmarked vehicles and non-uniformed office dressed staff that blend in with members of staff whilst onsite. DataBank has forgone this advertising space for the sake of security as opposed to many of our competitors. For additional security, clients are allocated a client code and all reference to the client is made using this code. Only specified staff members have access to the tapes, which can be delivered to pre-arranged sites only and must be signed for by authorised personnel.

Vault Fire Protection

The largest threat to offsite data is fire. DataBank uses highly sensitive VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus) to detect smoke and raise the alarm at the incipient stage, thereafter automatically releasing fire suppression gas. DataBank uses the latest in fire suppression gas flooding systems. (FM 200 and Inergen).

Vaulting / Environmental Controls

Environmental Control is a crucial aspect of offsite data storage. Specialist air-conditioners maintain constant temperature and humidity; and facilitate the removal of dust and other air-borne contaminants within the vault operations and storage areas. At DataBank, both temperature and humidity are controlled and monitored as per AS AS3636. This is especially important for any long-term storage such as monthly and EOY backups that are held offsite for one to seven or more years. Media stored in a non-environment controlled facility, may be un-readable when a restore is required.
